So the economy is the worst it’s been in our lifetime. Maybe you’ve lost your job or you’re simply looking for something to do since you can’t afford to go anywhere right now. Just maybe it’s time to write that book that you’ve thought about writing for the last 15 or 20 years.
Nearly everyone has contemplated writing a book someday. Some people even have the idea for a book, they just haven’t had the time to put it on paper.
Now, as the economy and our lives go through major restructuring, it may be the perfect time to get started. Writing a book requires absolutely no money up front. If you don’t have a computer, nearly all of our community libraries have computers and people there to show you how to work them. At the very least, most of us have paper and pens lying around the house, if not napkins and the envelopes of bills you haven’t been able to pay.
You shouldn’t dismiss your responsibilities, but for some of us, this time might offer an opportunity within the crisis. Once you get started, your productivity may give you a much needed boost of self-esteem, and investing in your self can pay great dividends down the road.
However, nothing is easy. The journey from first word on the page to a finished manuscript is a multi-stepped process. You need a good, well-written product or your family will be the only ones to buy it.
Whether you write fiction, mysteries, thrillers, science fiction, or non-fiction, the process of writing that book can take months, even years, to complete. Even there are no guarantees, it can’t hurt to get started while you have a little time and see where the path takes you. You may surprise yourself.
Whatever you write, it will help you on your life’s journey. It will give you a sense of accomplishment and a purpose. Writing is as much an act of self-discovery as anything else. It’s never a wasted activity, whatever the final outcome.
